Cathie Hughes nee McKenzie (1936-2009)

Cathie, who was a founder Member of the Group, died suddenly at her home in Ross Place, Fort William on 17th October 2009, aged 73.  She was born in Grange Road, Fort William and, through her mother, was connected to the Kennedy Family of Blarmafoldach, the crofting township high above Fort William.  She was also a dedicated Member of the Local History Society.  Her late husband, Ben Hughes, who died seven years ago, was the great-grandson of James MacDonald known as "Rheguil."  When James died in Fort William in 1913 his obituary stated that he was descended from the MacDonalds of Dalness on Loch Etive.  Cathie and Ben had for many years run a shop in Fort William's High Street.  She was a kind and friendly Highland lady and will be much missed.  She is survived by her two sons, Bernard and Philip, and her sister Chrissie.
